Tips From Mini Coach Drinkall

Mike has been busy coaching high school soccer at Wash this spring and was very excited when they made it to state.  Max and I were excited as well.  School got out early enough this year making it possible for us to tag along in Des Moines to watch some warriors kick butt in soccer!  (With help from my friend Joslin, "Jossy", as Max calls her!)

Max had loads of fun but took the trip quite seriously.  He must get his coaching abilities from his daddy.  Here are his thoughts about Warrior Soccer @ State 2011:

Alright kiddos.  Coach Mini Drink here to help you guys kick butt at state this year.  Pay attention or your FIRED!  (Off the team for those of you who don't speak "Drinkall".)

It's very important to warm up before playing in a soccer game.  A proper warm up includes sprinting in circles around the empty soccer fields.  Confidence is everything when it comes to winning so DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT wear sunglasses while warming up.  They tend to slide down and make you look silly.  (See above)  Looking silly will lower your confidence and cause you to lose.

Work the crowd.  Even if you don't know them.  Who cares.  You want them to like you.  If they like you, they'll cheer for you.  If they cheer for you, your confidence will rise resulting in better performance.  Better performance will ultimately win the soccer game.  So remember, high fives and wave!

Most importantly you must always stay hydrated and listen to your coaches.  They know best.  Period.

Where did I learn all these valuable pointers from you ask?  Simple.  My daddy.  He's an excellent coach!

Unfortunately, you can follow all these guidelines and still end up going to bed after a game in this kind of mood:

Boys, you did a great job at state.  That stinkin' ref made a horrible call.  I had my people call his people  to properly chew him out.  I'm sorry you lost this year fellas.  That kid was TOTALLY off sides.  Man, just thinking about it really gets my diaper in a bunch!

How should you wind down after a disappointing loss?  Simple.

Splash around in the pool!

Sleep in for once!

Kick your feet back.  Enjoy a good movie while your personal shopper goes to town for you!

Most importantly...
...know family is the most important thing in your life and that they'll be there cheering for you next year!

Love,
Lis
